U.S. 5th Fleet headquarters
Location: Manama, Bahrain.
Personnel: About 1,200 U.S. military.
Units: No ships are permanently assigned to this fleet. Rather, the 5th directs ships from other fleets that rotate through the region. It typically controls more than 20 ships, with about 1,000 people ashore and 15,000 afloat, according to the fleet's Web site.
Role: As the naval component of U.S. Central Command, the 5th Fleet is charged with patrolling the Persian Gulf, Red Sea and Arabian Sea, and the portion of the Indian Ocean west of India and north of Kenya.
