Iraq has a population of 24 million. A majority is Shia Muslim, but Saddam Hussein and the other members of the Baath Party political elite are Sunni Muslim. About one-quarter of Iraq's population lives in Baghdad, and more than 3.3 million live in Kurdish-controlled territory in northern Iraq.
