Iraq, at 168,927 square miles (437,521 square kilometers), is slightly larger than California. The land is mostly broad desert plains but has reedy marshes and large flooded areas along the southern border with Iran. Mountains rise along the northern borders with Iran and Turkey. It has 36 miles of coastline.
