Crackdown after Djindjic's death
Serbian police say they have rounded up thousands of people -- many of them with organized crime connections -- following the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic. Among those arrested is the man police suspect was the sniper who killed Djindjic.
The reformist, pro-Western politician was gunned down March 12 in Belgrade. The death of 50-year-old Djindjic, who played a key role in the overthrow of Slobodan Milosevic, was seen as a severe blow to the country's post-war hopes. Zoran Zivkovic, a close associate of Djindjic elected by parliament as Serbia's new prime minister, has pledged to press ahead with his predecessor's reforms.
