Evacuees across the nation
Back-to-back hurricanes and floods in the summer of 2005 forced millions -- including nearly half a million people in the city of New Orleans alone -- from their homes along the U.S. Gulf Coast. Four months later, as New Orleans and other Gulf Coast communities struggled to restore public services and open schools, millions of those whose homes were wrecked by storms and floods still lived with family and friends or in temporary housing.
