Presidential corruption

After years of repressive rule and corruption, South Korea's leaders got their comeuppance in August 1996 when former Presidents Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo were found guilty for their part in the 1979 overthrow of the republic, and for massive corruption as well. Roh was also convicted for his role in the Kwangju massacre. Less than a year later, President Kim Young Sam was implicated in a scandal.
