As dawn broke on December 26, 2004, it appeared that Sunday would be no different than other weekend days across Asia. That changed when the most powerful earthquake in more than 40 years struck under the Indian Ocean. The ensuing massive tsunamis wiped out cities and killed tens of thousands of people in a dozen countries.

A year later, much of Asia struggles to rebuild. Aid and workers have poured in, but experts say more help is needed. And as the painstaking process of identifying the dead continues, the survivors somberly reform their lives, families and communities.
