Caitlin Hammaren
Caitlin Hammaren, 19, of Westtown, New York, was a sophomore majoring in international studies and French, according to officials at her former school district. "She was just one of the most outstanding young individuals that I've had the privilege of working with in my 31 years as an educator," said John P. Latini, principal of Minisink Valley High School, where she graduated in 2005. "Caitlin was a leader among our students." Minisink Valley students and teachers shared their grief Tuesday at a counseling center set up in the school, Latini said. Scroll down to read and post comments |

We were shocked to learn that one of our former co-worker's daughter was one of the victims at VT. Our hearts and prayers go out to John Hammaran and his family. We were deeply saddened for all of the victims, and pray that their families can find comfort and support during this difficult time.

Caitlin H was a member of the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was loved by all and will be sorely missed by her sisters.

My family had the pleasure of meeting Caitlin a handful of times when my son Ryan traveled home with her for the holidays last year. She is such a beautiful, wonderful ray of sunshine. Caitlin's quick, wondrous smile made you feel very welcome in her presence. She would greet me with "Hi Ryan's Dad!" and then give me a hug before she left and say "Goodbye Ryan's Dad!" My wife and I just marveled at how truly special Caitlin is; how she jumped into your heart and spirit and would always be there. Since then, my wife, our daughter and I would always ask Ryan, "How's Caitlin." On Monday, when Ryan told us he had not heard from Caitlin, we prayed she was safe. We have all cried since we heard she was not.
To her parents and family, we know that no words can offer any solace or peace. However, we are certain you have heard and will continue to hear from complete strangers how your Caitlin touched so many lives in such wonderful ways. They say a parent's love can be measured in their child's smile. Caitlin is proof you had surrounded her with oceans of love. A man named Roger Guth once wrote: "Have a little faith in angels; you never know where they might be." Whenever you think of Caitlin and feel warmth and love, you will know your angel Caitlin is with you, doing her best to comfort you. Caitlin will be in our hearts and our prayers always. In the short time that I knew Caitlin, I knew she was an inspiration to so many people. I met her at Ring Dance this year through my girlfriend. She had the biggest smile on her face and she seemed to have such a kind and gentle heart. I'm sure all of her friends could tell you how much she uplifts the mood in any room she is in. I will always remember the short but pleasant time I had with Caitlin. She is truly a model of who we should all strive to be in life. Rest in peace, Caitlin. You are forever in our hearts.
