Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" is published. Joplin was unsuccessful in his goal, to gain concert-stage respectability for African-American music, but ragtime sheet music became wildly popular in the days before recorded music. Joplin was not recognized as a serious composer in his own time. Joplin received a Pulitzer Prize for music posthumously, in 1976.
