1890s-1910s: In New Orleans, jazz emerges. Combining elements
of marches, spirituals, and ragtime, the new music is an
American mix, a blend of African rhythms and European
instruments. Pioneers include King Oliver and Louis
Armstrong.
In 1917, The "Original Dixieland Jazz Band" releases the
first nationally distributed jazz recording. The band's
all-white musicians introduce the new music to a wider
audience across America and Europe -- and introduce both the
words "Dixieland" and "jazz" into the vocabulary.
