'It's about looking good.'Hollywood catwalk previews Oscar fashions
BEVERLY HILLS, California (CNN) -- At the Oscars, what you wear may be just as important as what you win. Sneak peaks of the "look" for the big event on March 21 were on show Wednesday during the Oscar Fashion Preview at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The runway sparkled with designs from Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani, Donna Karan -- just to name a few. Colors are hot this year with pink, lavender and red among the colors spicing up the occasion. Fred Hayman, the coordinator of fashion for the Oscars says black is good, but it can get boring. "Glamour is back," he said. "It's very important. It's especially important for Oscar night. There's nothing more important than looking your best." The minimalism of years past is gone, at least in hair. "It's quaff; it's well done," said Oscar hair stylist Frederick Fekkai. "It's hair with pieces -- hair pieces on top, hair extension, hair accessories. It's fun, it's great, but it's about silhouette. It's about looking good." To top it off an outfit with jewels, there are two distinct themes -- contemporary and classical, said Carol Brodie Gelles of Harry Winston Jewelers. "We're going to be looking at a very modern, romantic feeling ... very much inspired by "Shakespeare in Love" and by the film "Elizabeth," she said. "Then we're going to look at something which is very modern." SPECIAL: Oscars 1999 RELATED STORIES: Academy in love with 'Shakespeare In Love' RELATED SITE: The Official Academy Awards Site
