CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (CNN) -- Two of the six astronauts on board the space shuttle "Endeavour" began a six and a half hour spacewalk about 1 a.m. EST Monday.
Leroy Chiao and Daniel Barry, who had never walked in space, were to practice techniques that will be used in the construction of an international space station, starting next year.
"I think the word is `excited,"' Chiao said. "We'll be evaluating the [station] design concepts, the maintenance concepts and the assembly concepts... to make sure that we come up with a design and methods that will work."
Astronaut Winston Scott will accompany Chiao on a second spacewalk Wednesday, a day after the NASA science satellite, which was released Sunday morning, is pulled back aboard the shuttle. During the spacewalk, Scott will test a spacesuit, modified to keep him warm as he rests in the dead cold of space.
"Endeavour" is scheduled to return to earth Saturday. It will land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
