(IDG) -- Microsoft will release the first update to Windows 98 on Aug.
18, according to a letter the software maker sent to beta testers.
The new offerings will include multimedia technologies and updates that
have been released since Windows 98 debuted June 25, including DirectX
6.0, Windows Media Player, a WebTV guide called Electronic Program Guide,
supplemental Web fonts, and Microsoft Chat 2.5.
Despite a litany of installation and other problems
that have been reported regarding Windows 98, the update will not include
bug fixes, except some that address the multimedia technologies that are
included, a company representative said.
Microsoft has not yet determined whether the updates will be released
individually or as a package, the representative said. Some elements,
such as the DirectX 6.0 and the Media Player, already are available for
download from the Web site.
