Digital cameras zoom ahead

LAS VEGAS (IDG) -- Leading makers of digital cameras have been busy at the Consumer Electronics Show. Devices with improved zoom functions and hybrid units that combine a digital still camera with a camcorder are among the many products being rolled out here.

Sanyo Electric introduced two digital cameras. The VPC-Z400 offers 1280-by-960-pixel resolution and a capacity of up to 60 images on a 4MB SmartMedia flash memory card. The unit also offers a sequential image feature that can take up to ten images at a speed of two images per second. The VPC-Z400 has a 3X zoom lens. The 10.6-ounce unit measures 5 inches by 2.2 inches by 2.8 inches and is priced at $899. Sanyo's 7-ounce VPC-X350, measuring 4.2 inches by 2.4 inches by 1.4 inches, is priced at $599.

JVC announced two models in its DualCam family of two-in-one cameras that offer the choice of shooting digital still pictures or digital video. The cameras, with a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels, use 2MB of flash memory to store either 30 or 60 images. The units have a zoom function with a magnification of up to 320X and a range of features for adding special effects to images. The GR-AXM710, with a 2.5-inch LCD, is priced at $799.95, while the GR-AXM910, with a 3-inch LCD, is priced at $849.95.

Panasonic showed off its PV-L859 PhotoShot, which also merges a camcorder with a still camera. The camera offers a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels and has a 300X zoom. With a flip-out LCD, the PV-L859 will ship next month for $899.95.

Fuji debuted the MX-600 with a 3X zoom lens, equal to the 35-to-105mm coverage of a standard 35mm camera. It also has a 2X telephoto lens. The camera takes 24-bit images at a resolution of either 1280 by 1224 pixels or 640 by 480 pixels. It has a 1.8-inch LCD monitor. The autofocus MX-600 measures 4.8 inches by 3.3 inches by 2.4 inches and weighs 11.6 pounds. Pricing was not available. Fuji's pocket-size MX-700 uses a 2-inch polysilicon LCD and sells for $599.

Toshiba America Information Systems rolled out what it called its first professional-grade digital still camera, the PDR-M3. The camera features a 3X zoom and 1.8-inch LCD and supports a resolution of 1280 by 1024 pixels. It uses the 4MB SmartMedia card for storage and will ship next month. Pricing has not been finalized.
