GENEVA (IDG) -- America Online and Motorola will integrate AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) with wireless Motorola products, including its WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) phones, the companies have announced.

AOL's popular chat software can already be used on Microsoft's Windows CE-based handheld PCs and Palm Pilots, but this is the first time the AIM software will be used on voice phones.

WAP is a protocol that is used for sending data over wireless devices.

The application being jointly developed to integrate the products should be ready for roll out by early 2000, the companies said in a statement.

AIM will work with the newest Motorola WAP products, Timeport P1088 smart phone and the Timeport P930 two-way wireless communicator.
