X-1 (1949) - The first in a series of rocket-powered research aircraft built for the US Air Force and the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA). Originally designated the XS-1 (Experimental Sonic-1) it was built by the Bell Aircraft Company in the hopes of breaking the alleged "sound barrier" and investigating the transonic speed range. -- 23 sec./1.2M QuickTime movie
XB-70A Valkyrie (1960s) - Originally conceived as a supersonic bomber, the North American XB-70A Valkyrie instead became the world's largest experimental research aircraft, flying from September 21, 1964 until February 4, 1969. -- 23 sec./1.2M QuickTime movie
