Also known as the Cat's Eye Nebula, its eerie halo and filaments are material that the central star cast off thousands of years ago, according to astronomers. This color-enhanced image, which depicts nitrogen in reds and oxygen as greens and blues, comes from data from the Nordic Optical Telescope in the Canary Islands. (09/11/02)
