Special Event

Millennium 2000: Four Y2K Computer Glitches Reported

Aired January 1, 2000 - 12:04 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JONATHAN MANN, CNN ANCHOR: The transition from 1999 to 2000 was not totally flawless, though. Apparently there were some computer problems that cropped up.

CNN's Kathleen Koch is at the national Y2K center in Washington, where briefing has concluded, and she is joins us with latest.

KATHLEEN KOCH, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Jonathan, that green light for all systems go is now turning a slight shade of yellow here at the Y2K command center. They say that there have been four confirmed Y2K glitches, minor.

First of all, in five nuclear power plants with support functions, nothing that caused any loss of power. These were plants in Millstone, Connecticut, Indian Point, New York, Nine Mile Point, New York, Palo Verde, Arizona, Russelville, Arkansas, with minor functions such as access control, access to meteorological data.

Other issues with -- Amtrak had a minor problem identifying the trains. They say they have fixed that.

A federal building in Omaha, Nebraska -- its security system was stuck in the open position. They switched the calendar back to 1972, the last year that had the same numbers of days in the same order as this year, problem there has been fixed.

And finally, the Defense Department has experienced some Y2K- related disruptions in a satellite system.

Those are the confirmed problems. There is unconfirmed problem with FAA communicating some information to pilots, but there are other avenues for them to get that information to them. And that is not Y2K confirmed as a problem, though could be and they are still looking at it.

Reporting live at the Y2K center, I am Kathleen Koch for CNN.
