CNN Today

Moving-In Day For Clintons in New York

Aired January 5, 2000 - 2:23 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: Well, today, a famous power couple is getting the feel of the home they have purchased in suburban New York. As for house-warming gifts, you can bet the neighbors are trying to figure out what to buy the Clintons.

CNN's Gary Tuchman joins us with the latest from Chappaqua, New York. Gary, hello.

GARY TUCHMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello there, Natalie.

In November, Bill and Hillary Clinton closed on a house here in Chappaqua, New York, and now two months later it's moving-in day. Originally, it was just to be Hillary Rodham Clinton coming here, unpacking boxes and spending the night in her new home. But tonight now, she has a guest, her husband, the president of the United States.

Their new home was built back in 1880. It cost the Clintons $1.7 million. It is five bedrooms, two fireplaces and a swimming pool. Eventually, it will have a security guard and it will also have other security devices, but right now it has Secret Service Agents in front of it, protecting the first couple when they arrive here tonight.

The moving trucks came yesterday, aboard the moving trucks, items that the Clintons had in storage for the last seven years during the presidency, stuff that came from Arkansas, went into a storage facility in suburban Washington, and is now in the house here in Chappaqua, New York.

The first lady needed to establish residency here in New York state in order to run for the U.S. Senate, which she still hasn't officially declared for. She needed to do that by Election Day this November. She has done it with months to spare. Tonight will be the first night in 17 years that the Clintons have spent a night in a home that they owned.

This is Gary Tuchman, CNN, live in Chappaqua, New York.
