LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: And we have breaking news in Moscow, where apparently there's been a shooting at the United States embassy.
A correspondent there, Eileen O'Connor, is on the line with us now.
What's the story, Eileen.
EILEEN O'CONNOR, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, according to a press official from the embassy in an official statement, they said that around 6:50 p.m. Moscow time, which is about 10:50 your time, an unknown intruder they believe of Russian origin gained access to the embassy grounds. Now, they said that his actions potentially endangered the lives and safety of people in the embassy. He started an embassy vehicle. He was warned to stop several times. And then, this officials statement says, he was subdued by force.
Now, Russian officials here on the scene indicate that this man was shot and has been taken away to an intensive care unit in a nearby hospital. U.S. officials say that he is now in Russian custody and that he is being given medical treatment, but the U.S. would not could firm that he was shot, at least here in Moscow. But as I said, Russian officials indicate that this man was in fact shot.
Now, we do not know any motivation for gaining access to the embassy grounds. As you know, there is a war going on in Chechnya; the United States has been critical of military action there, and one Russian official indicated that he may have been a soldier, but we are not, in fact, sure of that. What we do know, though is that there was an unknown intruder who the U.S. embassy says was potentially dangerous and was subdued by force -- Lou.
WATERS: We have one indication that perhaps there were two intruders. Are you hearing anything about that?
O'CONNOR: We are not hearing anything. We were told one unknown intruder, not two intruders, but we do expect more information to be coming out probably from Washington or here in Moscow.
I can tell you, Lou, that there are a lot of criminal investigators here on the scene, military investigators as well from the Russian Government investigating what looks to be the scene inside the embassy. We are not being given access to see that, the scene of where this took place -- Lou. WATER: All right, Eileen, we'll be in touch with you. Eileen O'Connor's in Moscow, and we expect more information on this news of a shooting at the U.S. embassy in Moscow.
