Sony Launches Urban Entertainment Complex in Berlin

Aired January 20, 2000 - 2:55 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: For all you music lovers, Sony is opening its doors to a Berlin entertainment complex that is sure to get you rockin'. The high-tech complex mixes a bit of Beatle-mania and 1960s memorabilia with 21st-century technology.

CNN's Eric Orlander takes us there.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ERIC OLANDER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Mix a dash of high-tech, a submarine full of Beatle memorabilia, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and five years of planning; then cover it all with a huge glass megacomplex and you'll have an idea of what went into launching Sony's new urban entertainment complex in Berlin.

EDGAR VAN OMMEN, SONY BERLIN (through translator): Our children today are growing up entirely different. They grow up with personal computers, digital technology and so forth. This means they think totally different from us adults, and they will base their interactive communication on a different level and they will be just as happy as we were.

OLANDER: Thursday is the big day, as the new music museum opens its doors and lets visitors do far-out things, like starring in the Beatles' film, "Yellow Submarine."

VINCENT DORGERLOH, STUDENT (through translator): The special thing is that our entire class is here and that the organizers did a really cool job with three-dimensional effects and so on.

OLANDER: Classical music lovers can step up to a podium and conduct a virtual Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, or any number of cool ways to spin, play, or create your own tunes for the new millennium.

But for now, though, the favorite among the people who had a sneak preview is definitely getting the chance to help John, Paul, George and Ringo save the world from the blue meanies.

Eric Olander, CNN.
