CNN Today

Hello, Mommy: Monroe, Michigan's, Amy Janssen Delivers Surprise Baby

Aired February 7, 2000 - 1:57 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DONNA KELLEY, CNN ANCHOR: Amy Janssen is her name. She settled in -- she wasn't feeling too well before it, but she settled in for a quiet bath all alone and she ended up not so all alone.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Yes. She was in the family way apparently.

Details now from Carly Walker in CNN affiliate WTOL in Monroe, Michigan.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CARLY WALKER, REPORTER (voice-over): Mercy Memorial Hospital: That's where the Janssen family is gathering to see a new and very tiny member of their family.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's kind of weird not knowing that one day I didn't have a sister (ph) and then the next day I do. Kind of weird.

WALKER: A lot of different emotions have been felt in this hospital room. Today it's joy, but Friday night it was complete and absolute shock.

AMY JANSSEN, NEW MOTHER: I mean, I was watching the Newlywed Game at 7:00, and 7:15 I ran the bath water, and 7:30 there was a little girl.

(LAUGHTER)

WALKER: Neither husband Tim or, more importantly, Amy had any idea she was about to have a baby. She blames a medical condition that keeps her from having a menstrual cycle for months at a time.

TIM JANSSEN, NEW FATHER: I didn't know to say anything other than maybe putting on a little weight and I just kind of attributed that to, like, the holidays and inactivity.

A. JANSSEN: I never felt any movement. Though I had indigestion about a month ago. Went and got some Tums. But it wasn't indigestion.

WALKER: What Amy thought was indigestion was in fact little Sydney Adaline (ph). She came seven weeks early and weighs only four pounds, but she's healthy.

T. JANSSEN: My wife's parents, I think, were pretty speechless when they found out what was going on.

WALKER: Their shock quickly turned to support, and now the Janssens have enough baby stuff to last at least a little while.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

KELLEY: One of the people taken by surprise by this whole thing, there was a pizza delivery guy. It turns out that the Janssens had ordered pizza and, as you can imagine, they forgot all about the pizza when the baby came.

WATERS: So basically just everyone in Monroe, Michigan, was surprised over the weekend. And we want to congratulate the family, and good luck with all of that.
