Internet Providing Opportunity For Indie Filmmakers

Aired February 19, 2000 - 6:22 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDRIA HALL, CNN ANCHOR: Independent filmmakers hope going online increases their bottom line. Those trying to get recognition for themselves and their films say the Net is the easiest and least expensive way to get worldwide exposure. It certainly worked for "The Blair Witch Project," and as CNN's Internet correspondent Allison Tom tells us, it may work for other films, too.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ALLISON TOM, CNN INTERNET CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Independent filmmakers around the world are getting one step closer to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood with the help of technology and the Internet. "Holiday Romance" is a short independent film. It was nominated for an Academy Award in 1999.

ALEX JOVY, INDEPENDENT FILMMAKER: It's very mainstream, it's sort of a romance story, you know, sort of a -- I guess I'm a hopeless romantic somewhere deep down and...

TOM: Jovy is one of the many independent filmmakers displaying his work online. He says the Internet is a unique tool for both creators and consumers.

JOVY: For short films, it really lends itself to be screened for a couple of minutes over the Internet. There's a really wide audience out there.

TOM: "The Blair Witch Project" was one of the first success stories to show that the Net can be an effective distribution channel for low budget indie films. Ifilm.com, an entertainment Web site, is trying to make that same success happen for thousands of unknown independent filmmakers.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A video comes in from Eastern Europe, or it comes in from Saudi Arabia, or it comes in from Argentina, and a new talent is discovered.

TOM: AtomFilms is another online entertainment distribution company, the site features dozens of international films, ones from London, France, and South Africa. The company says the Internet enables independent filmmakers worldwide direct access and opportunities to the big entertainment studios.

MICHAEL COMISH, ATOMFILMS EUROPE: The nature of the Net is such that it's a much more cost effective way of reaching markets, and you can promote and distribute films in a cost effective way that you couldn't before.

TOM: For now, the Internet will continue to be a place for independent film makers to do what they do best, to experiment and to express their visions of life.

Allison Tom, CNN.
