WorldViewMcCain and Bush Looking Forward to Next Primaries in Hotly Contested GOP Presidential BattleAired February 23, 2000 - 6:06 p.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. JUDY WOODRUFF, CNN ANCHOR: In the U.S. presidential race, Arizona Senator John McCain has scored two Republican primary victories over Texas Governor George W. Bush. Bouncing back from a defeat last week, McCain rode a record turnout to an upset win in Michigan Tuesday, and easily triumphed in his home state. But both candidates are already looking forward. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) WOODRUFF (voice-over): Senator John McCain took his campaign to the state of Washington Wednesday, hoping to build on the momentum of his twin victories, and according a campaign official, mend wounds among Republicans after bitter primary fights with George W. Bush. A million voters turned out in Michigan and McCain's win came courtesy of the independents and Democrats among them who are permitted to vote under state party rules. The candidate says that was the message of his victory. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN (R-AZ), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: We can reassemble a coalition, a coalition that reaches out across party lines, preserving our core conservative Republican principles and yet attracting to our banner people who are independents, people who are Democrats, libertarians, vegetarians, we want them all. WOODRUFF: In fact, Michigan Republicans voted overwhelmingly for George W. Bush, something the governor stressed Wednesday in California, which holds its own crucial contest on March 7. GOV. GEORGE W. BUSH (R-TX), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I want to congratulate my opponent for a race well run, but he's going to learn in the long run it's going to be Republicans and like-minded independents who are going to make the decision in this primary. WOODRUFF: So far, Bush has collected 105 delegates to McCain's 95, 1,034 are needed to gain the nomination. A string of primaries, many in delegate-rich states, are coming up in the next two weeks. Both candidates now acknowledge a long road ahead to the July Republican Convention in Philadelphia.
