WorldViewInternational Concern About Freedom Party's Role in Austria's Coalition GovernmentAired February 29, 2000 - 6:17 p.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. SONIA RUSELER, CNN ANCHOR: A day after Austria's far-right Freedom Party leader Joerg Haider resigned, the European Union, Israel and the United States remain concerned about the Freedom Party's role in Austria's coalition government. The Austrian public is also reacting to the resignation, as CNN's Richard Blystone reports. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) RICHARD BLYSTONE, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Most Austrians hope Haider will stay quiet for a while, that the domestic pressure and international ostracism will ease and the new coalition can kickstart a system stalled after 14 years of the left and right sharing power, but that will require both raising taxes and cutting back on services, and will be highly unpopular. HERBERT LACKNER, "PROFIL" MAGAZINE: Very many of the new people that came into the government from the Freedom Party, they're just plain amateurs, and they are not fit to be ministers. They are not fit for government. We've only seen 25 days of this government, and it has faced so many problems. BLYSTONE (on camera): Novice ministers with a job that would tax the most experienced. If the new government cracks under the pressure and elections are called, look for Joerg Haider back on center stage. Richard Blystone, CNN, Vienna.
