Pennsylvania Shootings: FBI to Investigate Possible Racial Motivation; Alleged Gunman to Be Arraigned Today

Aired March 2, 2000 - 1:06 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Investigators in suburban Pittsburgh still are trying to put together all the pieces after that shooting spree yesterday that left two victims dead and three others critically wounded.

CNN's Deborah Feyerick follows up from Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania -- Deborah.

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Lou, CNN has learned that Allegheny Police have recovered a notebook from the alleged gunman's apartment. They say that the notebook is filled with anti- white and anti-semitic writings.

Right now, the FBI is investigating to determine whether this shooting was racially motivated.

Numerous witnesses recount how Taylor made several comments targeting white people.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He told me I was a racist pig, white trash. And then he kept repeating different things. I don't remember everything he said. I wasn't trying -- I was trying to just nod at -- just ignore him.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

FEYERICK: That was the maintenance worker from Taylor's apartment building, where he shot another maintenance worker, according to police.

Now, the five victims were all white men. They were shot execution-style in the head and neck area.

Taylor's lawyer refused to discuss his client's mental history. He did say that he had met with Taylor several times, as well as with Taylor's family.

Now, the chief of police says that there are racial overtones to this shooting, that, he says, this was an act of an angry young man, a man who wanted to take his anger out on other people.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CHIEF GERALD BREWER, WILKINSBURG, PA. POLICE: There are, obviously, racial overtones. Witnesses are telling us that he said he was going to kill white people. He, obviously, shot five white victims. There, again, you know, he was a very angry young man, and he just went on a shooting rampage. So, you know, it's still difficult to determine just what his mind-set was.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

FEYERICK: Ronald Taylor will be formally arraigned on all charges today at about 2:30.

Meanwhile, one of the survivors, who had been declared brain dead, was taken off life support earlier today.

Many people here expressing their sadness and their sorrow over the deaths of innocent people -- Lou.

WATERS: Deborah Feyerick in suburban Pittsburgh, PA.
