Three Dead, 21 Injured in 22-Vehicle Pileup on Florida's Interstate 10

Aired March 8, 2000 - 1:01 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: A large traffic pileup in Florida has shut down an interstate highway and killed at least three people. The collision occurred this morning on Interstate 10 in Wellborn, Florida, closing the road in both directions. At least 22 vehicles were involved, including a truck carrying uric acid. Officials say some acid leaked, but the spill has been contained. The cause of the accident is under investigation, but early reports suggested that fog and smoke from a nearby wildfire may have played a role. At least 21 people were injured.

Some are at the Shands at Live Oak Hospital, where Rhonda Sherrod is an administrator, and she joins us by telephone.

Ms. Sherrod, can you tell us about the victims you have there and the extent of their injuries?

RHONDA SHERROD, ADMINISTRATOR, SHANDS AT LIVE OAK: We've received 14 victims from the accident, ranging in injury from minor injuries to critical injuries. We've airlifted three of the more serious -- seriously-injured patients to other larger hospitals in the area.

ALLEN: This happened on an interstate. I'm wondering how far is your hospital from the scene? How long did it take many of these people to get to some help?

SHERROD: We're approximately 10-15 miles from the interstate where the accident was.

ALLEN: Do you know anything more about those that are in critical that were sent from your hospital to somewhere else.

SHERROD: No, I do not.

ALLEN: Has anyone there said to you, or have you heard about what exactly may have caused this all to happen?

SHERROD: No, ma'am. We haven't received any information about what caused it.

ALLEN: All right. Rhonda Sherrod, thank you. Again, more than a dozen people injured in that crash are at the hospital there.
