NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: A quick quiz for you: What's the square root of 49? Not sure?

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: I always hated quick quizzes.

ALLEN: Don't even try, Lou.

We know a dog that can provide the answer.

WATERS: A dog, yes, she said it right. We have the story of Isaac (ph), the counting canine, from our affiliate station WBNS in Columbus, Ohio.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GARY WINNER, DOG OWNER: How are you?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: OK. How are you doing?

WINNER: I'm fine, thank you.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I need some of this.

WINNER: Boy, that Luke's (ph) blend has been very popular these days.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Really?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: Excuse me, Isaac.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: I think it's a gift, a special gift. I said it was a gift from God.

One day, I just was walking along, and I held up some fingers...

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) WINNER: Isaac, how many?

(DOG BARKING)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: ... that's when it all started.

A canine calculator.

So you can challenge him with a square root.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: The square root of 49, how many?

(SEVEN BARKS)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: You can challenge him with a divide...

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: Six divided by two equals what? How many, Isaac? What's the answer?

(THREE BARKS)

WINNER: Oh, my.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: Multiply, add, subtract, and he'll get the answer right.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: Square root of nine.

(THREE BARKS)

That was an easy one, wasn't it?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: God.

WINNER: Huh?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: Come, come, Isaac.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: I can't totally explain it . I say it's positive reinforcement...

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: Good dog, good dog.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: He gets the answer right and I give him a treat.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: Good boy.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That is freaky.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: A lot of people that think that there's tricks, there's hand signals or there's eye signals, but you know, I've had them challenge me. I have put gloves on, I've put my hands in my pocket.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: How has your day been going, pretty smooth?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: OK, yes.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: We're working now on some compound questions. I will say -- I'll ask him a question, I'll build upon that. I'll say, "Isaac, what's two times four minus three? What's the answer?

(FIVE BARKS)

Good dog.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: Oh, he's just a constant, faithful companion. He loves me no matter what I do, and it's a unconditional love that I like about that dog.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WINNER: We've had a busy day today, haven't we? Let's go home.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(END VIDEOTAPE)

ALLEN: That's amazing. WATERS: Some people have a lot of time on their hands, apparently.

ALLEN: But can he spell?

WATERS: Well, if he can, Letterman, here we come.
