Hard-Hit Texas Neighborhood Suffers Tornado Damage But No Injuries

Aired March 29, 2000 - 1:31 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Our top story today is the clean-up effort in Fort Worth, Texas, after those back-to-back tornadoes last evening. The twisters damaged homes and stripped the brick walls off a church. One tornado went downtown, knocking windows out of the skyscrapers. So far, the storm is blamed for at least three deaths in the Fort Worth area.

And Barbara White of CNN affiliate KDFW in Grand Prairie, Texas, today and joins us with a report.

BARBARA WHITE, KDFW CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Well, Lou, all- told there were 56 homes damaged here and eight homes destroyed. The street that we're standing on is one of the hardest hit in Grand Prairie. Residents were kept away from this street until about 7:00 this morning, and they came back to find massive destruction in the daylight hours. : One family that we spoke with heard the warning that a tornado was about to hit, gathered up their three sons and went to the middle of the home. And they were able to survive while the rest of their house was literally blown away, bricks crumbling around them. The only thing that was left standing in that house was a single bookcase, and not a book or an item on those shelves was disturbed.

But otherwise this afternoon, things are returning to normal. There are scores of volunteers out here to help these folks rebuild and repair, which they are getting on the way to doing. In fact, you can probably hear some of the equipment behind me.

As for later this afternoon, the city plans to get out here and remove much of the debris that is littering the streets and the yards here. A lot were toppled in this tornado that hit this street last night.

Lou, back to you.

WATERS: Barbara, everyone accounted for?

WHITE: Absolutely, Lou, and that's the one thing that neighbors are so grateful for. No one was injured. And they say as far as the repairs and the rebuilding, they can handle that, no problem.

WATERS: Right, Barbara White, thanks so much, CNN affiliate KDFW today helping us with our coverage of those terrible storms last evening.
