Mental Health Experts Await Meeting With Lazaro Gonzalez

Aired April 10, 2000 - 2:34 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Now back to Miami, CNN Miami bureau chief John Zarrella. What's new, John?

JOHN ZARRELLA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Lou, we've just a few moments ago by phone spoken with Dr. Jerry Wiener. He is one of the two psychiatrists in the building behind me here, waiting for that meeting with Lazaro Gonzalez, which has not yet begun. And he said that what their plan is to meet, and then after the meeting they will fly back to Washington, D.C. They will speak personally with Doris Meisner, who is the head of the INS, commissioner of INS, and then file a written report.

When asked what he thought should be done, he said, quoting: "The appropriate, logical and humane thing to do is for Elian to go back with his father." He saw no reason why that could not be accomplished and should not be accomplished. And he also said it was the most constructive and least harmful way to return Elian to his father is what they are here to accomplish, to work out those details. And he is, of course, as everyone else is, pacing and waiting for Lazaro Gonzalez to show us, over an hour late now. And he had been, of course, meeting at another hospital with his daughter, Marisleysis, who had been admitted over the weekend, suffering from exhaustion.

This is John Zarrella, reporting live, in Miami.

WATERS: And John, Marisleysis also was to attend these meetings. Has there been any decision on her status now?

ZARRELLA: Well, at this point, our understanding is she's still in the hospital, at Mercy Hospital, and that the government has told Lazaro Gonzalez and the attorneys representing him that what they would do is at a later date, at another point Marisleysis could meet with these -- with the psychiatrists and the psychologist if that was deemed necessary, but that they were going ahead with this meeting today with or without Marisleysis and that Lazaro needed to be here and attend.

Again, still waiting, though, for Lazaro Gonzalez to show up -- Lou.

WATERS: All right, John Zarrella, watching down there at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. When Lazaro Gonzalez shows up, we'll let you know about it -- Natalie.
