Gonzalez Family Attorney: Family Meeting 'Should Take Place Before Any Further Action is Initiated by the INS'

Aired April 11, 2000 - 11:57 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: And we are going to take you live now to Miami. We expect a statement from outside the home, where Elian Gonzalez has been staying for the last four months. This is an attorney for the Gonzalez family.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

MANNY DIAZ, GONZALEZ FAMILY ATTORNEY: ... as soon as possible. As you know, for some time now, Lazaro has indicated that this is a family matter that should be decided and discussed among family members, as happens in this country everyday around a kitchen table. It is imperative that the family get together and talk about the situation and talk about what's happened in the last 4 1/2 months. it is imperative that at that meeting it be strictly family, that there be no government intervention from either government, that there be no lawyers present, and no media present, strictly a family matter.

And in response to -- in response to the offer that was made yesterday, Lazaro is today stating very emphatically that he is very much in favor of that meeting taking place and that that meeting should take place before any further action is initiated by the INS.

And Lazaro is also requesting that it is imperative that this meeting take place before any further action is taken on the part of the INS or the Department of Justice.

And finally, I would like to announce that Lazaro is willing to accept the invitation of the attorney general and Commissioner Meissner and is prepared to travel to Washington tomorrow to meet with both of them.

Thank you.

Can I try to do this in Spanish?

KAGAN: We have been listening to a statement from Manny Diaz. He is representing the Miami relatives of Elian Gonzalez, once again stating that those family members believe that this is a family matter, not a government matter, demanding that there is a meeting between family, between the Miami relatives and Juan Miguel Gonzalez, that should take place before any more action by the INS or the Justice Department. This, they are saying, should be a meeting with no lawyers, no government officials and no media. And then the new news out of there, Lazaro Gonzalez, the great uncle of Elian Gonzalez saying he is willing to travel to Washington D.C. as early as tomorrow to meet with Elian Gonzalez's father. We will have to see if they accept that offer.
