George W. Bush Comments on Giuliani Dropping Out of Senate Race

Aired May 19, 2000 - 3:36 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BOBBIE BATTISTA, CNN ANCHOR: Let me interrupt, John, I'm sorry. Hold on. George W. Bush is making comments.

GOV. GEORGE W. BUSH (R-TX), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: A call from my friend Rudy Giuliani. He was calling to inform me that he was dropping out of the race for the United States Senate in the state of New York. My reaction was this: I told Rudy that I understood it was a very difficult decision for him to make, and our prayers are with him, that I understood, that he is my friend, whether he's a candidate or not, for the United States Senate. I reminded him he needs to be proud of the job he has done as the mayor of New York City. He's got an excellent record as mayor. And now that our party -- it's time for our party to move on, I am confident that the New York Republican Party will nominate a New Yorker who will be able to win the United States Senate race next fall.

QUESTION: Are you disappointed?

BUSH: Well, it's hard for me to be disappointed when a friend is battling cancer, and what I'm hopeful about is that he'll have a speedy recovery, that his health will be strong and that -- but you know, life sometimes you can be dealt a cruel blow, and Rudy was when it came to his health.

QUESTION: Who would you like to see run?

(CROSSTALK)

BUSH: Well, we'll have to see how his health goes. As you know, I'm not picking cabinets yet, Allison. As a matter of fact, I haven't even picked a vice president yet. But that's up to the party, and I'm confident the party will select a good, capable New Yorker to take on Mrs. Clinton.

Because I want to carry the state.

Well, because I want to be the president, and this is a swing state. This is a state that we hadn't done very well in 1992 and 1996. It's going to be different in the year 2000. I'm glad to be here in Western Kentucky. It's kind of got an interesting feel to it. It kind of reminds me of eastern Texas.
