Luxembourg Hostage Situation Over: Gunman Shot, Children Safe

Aired June 1, 2000 - 2:10 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDRIA HALL, CNN ANCHOR: Within the past hour, officials in Luxembourg stormed a day care center and shot a man holding 28 hostages, most of them children. Authorities say none of the children was harmed.

CNN's Patricia Kelly is standing by with the latest from the scene near Luxembourg's border with Germany -- Patricia.

PATRICIA KELLY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Andria, less than an hour ago, the CNN remote crew who were filming as close as they could to the day care center, where the hostages were being held reported that an armed assault had started. Shots were being fired, and even as those shots were being fired, uniformed police were seen carrying small children out of the day care center.

The assault did not last very long, a few minutes, and we have been told that a Luxembourg police sniper took the opportunity to shoot the hostage taker, when he appeared outside the building with two hostages, an adult on one side, a child on the other. The opportunity was taken to shoot him. He is reported by police to be critically injured. And none of the hostages have been injured.

They have all been taken to the crisis center, which is behind me here. I'm going to step back so that you can take a look and see the crisis center behind me. This is where parents have been waiting for news of their children for the past 28 hours. For 28 hours that this hostage crisis lasted.

Now we do believe that the children are inside and the teachers are inside. But I would like you to take a look at this dramatic video of the armed assault, the children being taken out -- I'm told that you do not have this video that was shot by the CNN crew. It hasn't yet arrived in to you. But they were the first to report that an armed assault had started. And this hostage crisis, which lasted 28 hours, was over -- Andria.

HALL: And initially, those reports that the hostage taker was shot dead, now he is critically injured, according to authorities. Thanks.
