LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: A major development in a investigation in Los Angeles, the police chief there, Bernard Parks, says he is satisfied with the work of investigators looking into the shooting death of his granddaughter. Last hour police announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Lori Gonzalez.
And CNN's Greg LaMotte joins us now from Los Angeles to fill us in on this May 28 shooting -- Greg.
GREG LAMOTTE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Lou, Los Angeles Police Chief Bernard Parks has appeared before the media hundreds of times in his career. He did so today, but it was both professional and personal.
Park's 20-year-old granddaughter Lori Gonzalez was shot and killed May 28 while driving her car in Los Angeles. Police say the intended victim was her passenger who ducked just as those bullets were being fired.
Less than an hour ago it was announced an 18-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged with murder. His name is Samuel Shabazz who Police say is a known gang member. Police say the shooting was gang- related, and that the passenger in Gonzalez's car is also a known gang member.
Police Chief Bernard Parks appeared before the media, this time on a more personal note.

CHIEF BERNARD PARKS, L.A. POLICE: I've certainly been at many of these news conferences in the past, providing several instances of positive and negative issues that have occurred in this department. I never thought that I would be here talking about my granddaughter in this fashion. And I just would like to say thank you to the community and the mayor and this department for this support.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
LAMOTTE: Police say tips from the public led to the arrest. Why was a known gang member in the car of the police chief's granddaughter? Police would only say that the two apparently have been friends since childhood. Lori Gonzalez had driven to Los Angeles from nearby Orange County apparently to visit her mother, which is Chief Park's daughter. Police say they believe Shabazz was attempting to shoot the passenger in her car, he ducked and the bullets struck Gonzalez. Police say they are continuing to look for additional suspects.
