Lear Jet Crashes Into Boca Raton Community; Other Aircraft May Be Involved

Aired June 23, 2000 - 1:32 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Bring you up to date on a story we've been focusing on within the past hour. There was a midair plane collision over Boca Raton, Florida. What we know is a Lear 55 charter jet taking off from Executive Airport, about 2 1/2 miles west of the crash site, headed for Fort Pierce, ran into another smaller craft over this apartment complex. The Lear landed here setting off small fires, which then were contained.

Last report from the sheriff's officer in Boca Raton, three confirmed dead. We know aboard the Lear jet there was a crew of two and one observer. We don't know much more about the second craft other than the fact that there was some wreckage found from a smaller craft.

Molly Simpkins, the director for operations for Metro Network, is on the line with us. Molly, what do you do and what do you know?

MOLLY SIMPKINS, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS, METRO NETWORKS: Well, I work for Metro Networks here in West Palm Beach, and we report news and traffic throughout this location and actually throughout the country. And what I know is approximately a quarter to 12:00 there was a report of a plane going down in Boca Raton, which is a suburb of West Palm Beach, pretty much between Miami and West Palm Beach.

And the initial reports were of two aircraft that had crashed and fallen to the ground. Then there was a report it was just a single Lear jet and that people heard an explosion and the plane broke in two and then fell to the ground.

We are -- we've also heard that there was a helicopter involved. There's been absolutely no confirmation of that. And now a local television station here in West Palm Beach is reporting there was a Lear jet and possibly a stunt plane. None of this, of course, has been confirmed by police.

WATERS: We have a confirmation from the sheriff's office, though, that a second craft was involved.

SIMPKINS: OK. Well, there you go.

WATERS: There we go.

SIMPKINS: They are confirming at least one fatality and they are continuing to locate wreckage, and unfortunately body parts, in about a half-mile debris field in a development.

WATERS: All right, Molly Simpkins, director of Metro Network, thanks.

A Lear 55 is down in Boca Raton in an apartment complex called Boca -- Boca Groves. Another plane wreckage has been spotted. We don't know much more about that. We're continuing to follow the story to see what more we can find out. And when we find out, we'll let you know about it.
