Gregory Craig, Juan Miguel's Lawyer, Reacts to Appeals Court Ruling

Aired June 23, 2000 - 4:40 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JUDY WOODRUFF, CNN ANCHOR: I'm Judy Woodruff in Washington.

We take you directly to the law offices in Washington of Gregory Craig, who is the attorney for the father of Elian Gonzalez, in the aftermath of an appeals court ruling today not to rehear the custody case that was handed down earlier. Let's listen.

GREGORY CRAIG, JUAN MIGUEL GONZALEZ' ATTY.: We are gratified that the 11th Circuit was unanimous in its decision to affirm those values and those traditions. Juan Miguel is grateful that the 11th Circuit has denied the petition for rehearing and has lifted all stays and all injunctions as of Wednesday afternoon of next week. Over the weekend, I will be meeting with him to discuss his plans for the coming week.

Juan Miguel, Nearcy (ph), Elian and Yanni look forward to resuming a normal life with friends and their family.

Thank you very much.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: How do you sleep at night? How do you stand what you did to that little boy?

WOODRUFF: We've been listening to Gregory Craig, attorney for the father of Elian Gonzalez. That statement in reaction to an 11th Circuit Court of Appeals decision announced today that it will not reconsider the custody battle over the 6-year-old Cuban boy. In effect, you just heard Mr. Craig say, in just a very brief statement, that he will be reviewing with the family with Juan Miguel Gonzalez, the father of Elian, over the weekend what the options are, but it sounded as if, based upon his final comment there, that Mr. Gonzalez is planning to take Elian and to return to Cuba, although Gregory Craig did not come out and say it. He said the family was looking forward to resuming, in his words, "a normal life with family and friend at home."

I'm Judy Woodruff in Washington.

Now let's go to "SHOWBIZ."
