CNN 20: Atlantis Docks with Mir, June 29, 1995

Aired June 29, 2000 - 1:50 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, JUNE 29, 1995)

JOHN HOLLIMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): When the docking came, we looked from the side on your left and from a camera pointed into the middle of Mir's docking port on the right. These were the words which were waited for on the ground.

UNIDENTIFIED ASTRONAUT: Houston, Atlantis, we have capture.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN SPACE CORRESPONDENT: This was a significant event because the last time that the U.S. and, at that time, the Soviet Union had met in space, it was July of 1975.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, JUNE 29, 1995)

UNIDENTIFIED NASA ADMINISTRATOR: Commander Vladmir Dugerov (ph) aboard the Mir also confirms capture.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

O'BRIEN: You had two control rooms, one in Moscow, or just outside of Moscow, and one in Houston linked during this docking. So as these vehicles approached: two huge vehicles traveling at 17,000 miles an hour and change, 200 miles above the planet.

Well, the shuttle commander at the time was Hoop Gibson (ph), who is as good a pilot as has ever flown a space shuttle. And he came down and guided that thing right down the middle of that cone, approaching at just the right speed, about a tenth of a foot per second. Had a perfect first attempt docking. And before long, the hatches were open, hands were shook, gifts were exchanged and an entirely new era of U.S. and Russian cooperation in space was underway.
