3 Police, 1 Civilian Shot in Santa Monica Hostage Situation

Aired July 4, 2000 - 7:26 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to go back to one of our top stories: a shootout and a hostage situation on the Santa Monica Pier right now in Southern California.

And with us on the telephone is Susie Kim. She is with the Santa Monica Police Department.

Susie, can you tell us what happened?

SUSIE KIM, SANTA MONICA POLICE DEPT.: On Tuesday, July 4, 2000 at approximately 1:40 a.m., Santa Monica Police received a call from San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department of a multiple homicide suspect on the Santa Monica Pier. The suspect is identified as Jose Flores, a male Hispanic, 30-years old from San Bernardino. He was taken into custody in front of 322 Santa Monica Pier. Weapons were recovered on his person.

A second suspect who accompanied Flores ran from the police into the Playland Arcade where he opened fire on Santa Monica police officers. Three officers were shot and one civilian was injured. All injuries are non-life-threatening. All victims were taken into local hospitals.

At this time, the suspect continues to hold hostages inside the Playland Arcade.

LIN: Susie, do you know how many hostages are being held?

KIM: At this time we don't know.

LIN: Do you know what the state of mind of the gunman is right now?

KIM: No, I'm sorry. That's all the information that I have.

LIN: Do you have any idea what it is that he wants?

KIM: No, at this time we don't have that information.

LIN: All right, and your officers are doing all right?

KIM: Yes. All injuries are non-life-threatening.

LIN: Do you know who the civilian was who was shot? KIM: At this time, I don't have that information to release.

LIN: OK, we understand from wire reports that it was a bystander who simply just got caught up in the mix.

KIM: As I said, all the information I have I released to you.

LIN: Susie, this happened at about 1:40 in the morning your time, Pacific time.

KIM: Correct.

LIN: Is the pier open at that hour?

KIM: Part of the pier is still open then.

LIN: How many people would normally be on the pier that early in the morning?

KIM: That information I don't have right now.

LIN: All right. But it sounds like the arcade was open at the time?

KIM: Correct. That's all the information I have.

LIN: All right, thank you very much.

Susie Kim with the Santa Monica Police Department with an update on that situation. Three police officers shot, including a civilian, all seem to be doing fairly well, but the hostage situation continues.
