THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: As we've been reporting, the son of basketball great Julius Erving has been found dead. The family is having a news conference now in Orlando. Family Pat Williams is speaking.
(JOINED IN PROGRESS)
PAT WILLIAMS, ERVING FAMILY SPOKESMAN: ... that they obviously are saddened and deeply impacted by the loss of their brother and their youngest child. However, there's a sense of closure which was important to the Ervings. Living in this situation of not knowing and having all sorts of conjecture and imaginations, that was really, really tough on the family.
And they are grateful to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, the enormous amount of work that Sheriff Eslinger and his staff have put into this well beyond the call of duty. I mean, these men and women have been second-milers to the nth degree for the Ervings and they're very grateful; and grateful that they were able to bring closure to it. There's a completeness to it, there's a finality that was very, very important to them.
And as Julius pointed out to me, he said, this will now allow us to go on. He said, we have learned a great deal from this experience. He said the Erving family is stronger as a result of this, hard as it has been. And he said, we are prepared to go on as a family. And then Julius made a very interesting statement. He said, what other choice do we have?
So I felt -- frankly, I felt encouraged and uplifted myself by Julius' outlook on this and the way the Erving family are handling it. It get the sense that he's reaching out trying to uplift and comfort the rest of us.
So that's really the message that he and his family have at this point. The Erving children are returning to the home nest at this point. Grandparents are arriving. Long-time friends are beginning to congregate. So the clan is being put together over the weekend to help get through this.
Funeral information at this point is incomplete. There is no news at this point, nothing I can share with you at this time. And if you are not aware, Sheriff Eslinger is going to have a 4:00 press conference today and will update you.
WATERS: Erving family spokesman Pat Williams. There's going to be another news conference later, you just heard, with the sheriff who not too long ago said there was not necessarily any evidence of foul play in the death of Cory Erving. We've been reporting this story for some time, and the Erving family came out and made an appeal to the public to help them find their son, 19-year-old Cory, who had a history of drugs and alcohol abuse. A reward was offered, but Julius Erving, Dr. J, confirmed earlier today that the body found in the pond near their Florida was, indeed, that of their 19-year-old son, Cory.
