Three-Day Orlando Hostage Standoff Ends as Police Secure Home

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: A three-day hostage standoff has apparently ended in Orlando, Florida. Police evidently have made entry into the home.

We go to Mark Potter, who's live on the scene and has the latest -- Mark.

MARK POTTER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, Kyra, it appears that this three-day hostage standoff has ended. The details are very sketchy right now, but here is what we know. The police here are saying that the house has now been secured by the police and that two of the three hostages have now been removed from the home. A 16-year-old girl and an infant girl have been removed and are now being looked over by medical personnel.

We do not know yet the condition of the other hostage, a 40-year- old woman, nor do we know the condition of the hostage-taker himself, Jamie Petron. There are reports a shot was fired. We cannot confirm that. A police spokesman, Sergeant Angelo Nieves, is saying he is trying to get confirmation of that report from the scene, from the tactical units on the scene. But right now, he is able to confirm that the situation is under control.

It appears that this hostage crisis that has been going on for three days here in Orlando is over. Two of the hostages, it is confirmed, are free, and now are in the hands of medical personnel. This is a case that began on Friday, when Petron was accused of being involved in a convenience store robbery in Pompano Beach, Florida, in which a clerk was shot and killed. The owner of the store was critically wounded. On Saturday, Petron was spotted here in Orlando by sheriff's deputies.

They confronted him. He rammed their vehicle, they say, with his vehicle, and shot a sheriff's deputy. Then, he ran into this home and took seven hostages, police say, originally. Two of hostages escaped on Saturday. Two others, an 8-year-old boy and infant, were released yesterday. And since then, police have been negotiating for the release of the other hostages.

Earlier today, they were saying that the negotiations were under way, that Petron had said he would release the hostages, but there was no movement toward that end. So it appears that it has come to an end, probably forced by the officers themselves. And we are just waiting for further details. But this situation has ended. At least two of the hostages are out now.
