BERNARD SHAW, CNN ANCHOR: The United States Presidential campaign is entering a new and crucial phase. With the contenders preparing to choose their running mates, sources are telling CNN that the nod could come sooner than expected. CNN's Jonathan Karl joins us live from Austin, Texas. JONATHAN KARL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Bernie, we're hearing that George W. Bush will make his call to his choice for a running mate tonight. And all signs at this late point, point to Dick Cheney as his choice for the vice presidential nominee. Republican Party officials all around the country are virtually unanimous in saying that they believe that Cheney will be the choice. And the Associated Press reporting at this hour that it's a done deal; that, in fact, it is Cheney. Now, officially, campaign officials here in Austin are saying that George W. Bush has notified nobody of his choice. They don't deny that he has made up his mind. But they are saying he has notified no one, not even wife Laura, who he has long said would be first to know who he will pick. But that said, again, all anticipation here that tomorrow George Bush will announce that Dick Cheney is his choice for a running mate -- Bernie. SHAW: Thank you, Jonathan Karl in Texas with the latest from there. On the Democratic side, Al Gore says he will announce his choice for running mate soon as well. Some of the likely candidates include Senators Evan Bayh, John Kerry and Bob Graham. With the Democratic convention scheduled for Mid-August, Mr. Gore has a bit more time before he has to reveal his choice.
