Aired August 2, 2000 - 10:19 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: We roll on here from Philadelphia, site of the Republican National Convention. Last hour, we talked about President Gerald Ford admitted last night to a local hospital, treated for about 60 minutes and released. Now getting word, earlier today, he was taken back to the hospital and re -- put back into the hospital for evaluation, examination.

Whitney Hartman with the hospital, a spokesperson.

Whitney, can you hear me? Ms. Hartman?

WHITNEY HARTMAN, HAHNEMANN UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL SPOKESWOMAN: Yes.

HEMMER: OK, Bill Hemmer here. We're live on CNN right now.

HARTMAN: OK.

HEMMER: Is it the Hahnemann University Hospital? Am I saying that right?

HARTMAN: Yes, that's correct.

HEMMER: Can you tell us how is the president right now?

HARTMAN: All I can tell you is that the president did walk in this morning. He came in approximately 9:00. He is with Mrs. Ford and he's undergoing further evaluation.

HEMMER: Can you talk at all about the evaluations undergoing right now?

HARTMAN: No, he just, like I said, just come in this morning. He was -- did come in with a sinus infection, or was treated for a sinus infection last night. And right now they're just undergoing further evaluation.

HEMMER: Are you suggesting the infection that he was treated for last night has not gone away or cleared up by this morning?

HARTMAN: I can't make a comment on that, actually. We're not sure if it's related.

HEMMER: We were told last night, according to aides anyway, he was treated for about an hour. Is that about right? HARTMAN: That's correct.

HEMMER: And his wife Betty is with him now?

HARTMAN: That's correct.

HEMMER: Did he have plans to leave Philadelphia today or was he staying longer in the week?

HARTMAN: Have not heard any of that information.

HEMMER: Any idea how much longer he may be in your hospital this morning?

HARTMAN: No, they have not given us the word on that. But as of right now, I haven't heard of any, you know, of him leaving or staying.

HEMMER: OK, according to my watch, he's been there for about an hour and 20 minutes now?

HARTMAN: That's correct.

HEMMER: OK. How would you describe his condition?

HARTMAN: Like I said, he did walk in this morning. He did walk in from a car.

HEMMER: OK, all right. Whitney Hartman, keep us posted, please.

HARTMAN: I sure will.

HEMMER: Spokesperson -- OK, thank you.

Ms. Whitney Hartman there, Hahnemann University Hospital in downtown Philadelphia. Spokesperson there.

Again, Gerald Ford back in the hospital today. We'll keep our fingers crossed that, indeed, it is just that sinus infection, that his condition does improve throughout the day today.
