Senator Joseph Lieberman Joins Al Gore on the Democratic Ticket

Aired August 7, 2000 - 4:19 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: And he finally stepped out here, Jan: Senator Lieberman with his wife in the driveway.

SEN. JOSEPH LIEBERMAN (D), CONNECTICUT: ... the people from the press (UNINTELLIGIBLE)...

QUESTION: Just tell us about the call, Joe.

LIEBERMAN: The president -- the vice president asked me if I would do him the honor of running with him, and I said: "Believe me, it's my honor. I'm humbled, I'm grateful, I'm proud, and I'm excited, because I believe in you." And we prayed a little together, to tell you the truth.

QUESTION: I'm sorry (UNINTELLIGIBLE).

(CROSSTALK)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Go get 'em, Joe.

LIEBERMAN: Thank you.

(APPLAUSE)

WATERS: All right, Senator Lieberman, you heard him. He's been described as a deeply religious man, already telling us he's prayed a bit with Vice President Gore as heads on to Nashville to meet up with the vice president for tomorrow's official announcement that he now not only is Al Gore's running mate but the first Orthodox Jew to be on a major party ticket in the history of the United States.

In fact, the senator even told the AFL-CIO convention in his state earlier this morning that to be Gore's running mate is, to quote him, "a dream beyond anything I ever dreamed, being on a national ticket." And now he's on his way to answer the call.

Jan Hopkins.
