George W. Bush Delivers Remarks in Portland, Oregon

Aired August 11, 2000 - 1:59 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: All right. The Republicans expect to lay low during the Democratic convention, but that doesn't start until Monday. Mr. Bush is in Portland, Oregon right. He's speaking at a rally there, in a state where he in the latest poll is neck and neck with Al Gore.

Let's listen a bit.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

(APPLAUSE)

GOV. GEORGE W. BUSH (R-TX), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I'm so honored my friend, Senator John McCain, is traveling with me. What a great American hero.

(APPLAUSE)

He put me through my paces. We Republicans believe in competition.

(APPLAUSE)

He provided great competition, almost too much competition. I'm a better candidate because of John McCain and America's a better country because of his service.

(APPLAUSE)

I appreciate -- I appreciate so much -- I appreciate so much your United States senator, Senator Smith. He's a good man.

(APPLAUSE)

He's a thoughtful man. He's got one thing in his mind, like Congressman Walden does: what's best for Oregon and what's best for America. I appreciate your two service.

(APPLAUSE)

And my advice to the senator and the congressman is be patient -- help is on the way.

(APPLAUSE) Father Tyson (ph), thank you for opening up this beautiful campus. I hope we hadn't created too much noise for you here. But we appreciate what you do in term of educating the children of this country. Thanks for your hospitality.

(APPLAUSE)

WATERS: All right, George W. Bush up there in Portland, Oregon, with, as he said, John McCain campaigning with him. He just cleared out of California, where he's been campaigning in the past week.
