Taiwan: Super Typhoon Bilis Kills Two, Injures at Least Seven

Aired August 22, 2000 - 6:16 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BERNARD SHAW, CNN ANCHOR: In a matter of hours, Super Typhoon Bilis is expected to slam into the coast of mainland China after ripping through Taiwan.

Journalist Jason Blatt is in Taipei at Taiwan's Emergency Management Center for the typhoon -- Jason.

JASON BLATT, JOURNALIST, TVBS: Well, Bernard, it's 6:15 in the morning here in Taiwan, and lots of people are waking up to discover that the landscape has almost completely changed in the wake of this super-strong storm. Now, the worst part of the storm is already over for most parts of Taiwan. And the storm has already passed through and making way over to Fujian Province in the mainland.

And officially, the Central Weather Bureau has already downgraded this storm from a so-called super typhoon, or a typhoon typhoon. Now, over the period of the night, so far the death toll still remains at two people. One person -- man was injured when he working in a Taipei garbage dump. That was when a reinforcing made of mud fell on top of him. And another woman in Taipei County in northern Taiwan was killed when there was an electrical accident at her house and she was electrocuted.

Now, the official injury toll is only seven people, quite surprising given the strength of this storm. And what's even more intriguing to reporters right now is that there are still nine people trapped inside of a house in the mountainous area of central Taiwan. Now, according to a briefing just given by the vice premiere just minutes ago, this house was broken into three pieces during a rock slide.

Now, the center part of the house slid down the mountain and down to the bottom and took the nine people with it down. But the people in the other parts of the house that were on the sides managed to escape. And they're said to be in good conditions. Crews are already on their way to rescue them right now.

SHAW: At its height, how strong were the winds of the super typhoon?

BLATT: Well, they were upwards of 160 miles an hour. So basically, anything that wasn't nailed down pretty much sprouted wings and started to fly all over the place. Most of the people were injured by falling tree branches or by debris that was just flying all around all parts of the island. We could certainly see it in Taipei. It was quite dangerous to be out on the streets in the middle of the night.

SHAW: Thank you, Jason Blatt, with the latest from Taipei, Taiwan.
