California Flash Flooding Damages Homes, Strands Motorists

Aired August 30, 2000 - 1:23 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: The desert turned wet in Southern California where a heavy downpour produced flash flooding.

CNN's Carol Lin reports that homes were damaged, cars were pushed off roads, and a half-dozen motorists had to be rescued.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CAROL LIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Roads to rivers. Hard to believe, but this is the desert, the Yucca Valley area of Southern California, hit hard by the first measurable rain in months. The water rose so fast, it caught many drivers off-guard. Two teenagers on their way home from school became trapped in their car.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And I thought I could get through it, and then we got stuck. And I tried to put it in reverse and it just went that way.

LIN: They tried to escape and were nearly swept away.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It was pushing me. I thought I was just gone. I was just, like, oh my God, oh my God, and she screamed, water, water, water.

LIN: Just up the road, another person trapped in his car. He crawled out the window and into the bed of his pickup truck and decided to wait for help. Emergency crews rigged a rope line and the man followed it to safety. At least five others in the area had to be rescued from vehicles as well.

Hours later, the flood waters went down, leaving mud and rocks everywhere, rivers turning back to roads.

Carol Lin, CNN.
