New Hampshire Game Officials Look to Track Down Moose on the Loose

Aired September 2, 2000 - 9:41 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: For game officials in New Hampshire, the going was a bit rocky when they tried to keep a baby Bullwinkle out of some neighbors' swimming pools.

Reporter Andy Hershberger from CNN affiliate station WMUR in Manchester, New Hampshire, has the story of the moose on the loose.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ANDY HERSHBERGER, WMUR REPORTER (voice-over): It's only a yearling, a child in moose years. But 250 pounds of bouncing baby Bullwinkle had a mind set for Hooksett on a hot summer day.

ROSE ROY, MOOSE WATCHER: When I first got over there, I saw the moose swimming in a pool, just having a grand old time cooling off.

HERSHBERGER: She climbed out of the first pool and wandered around the yard, moose hackles hackled and nostrils flared, as two fish and game officers tried to herd the animal toward the river. But the lure of proper pH and chlorination in the neighbor's pool was too much to resist.

MIKE HINGLE, MOOSE WATCHER: Oh, no. I don't know what to think. I think -- I've never seen this before, that's for sure.

HERSHBERGER (on camera): The people who own this house weren't home at the time. Neighbors say that they're going to give them a call and tell them what happened. Should be an interesting phone call, something like, Hi, there was a moose in your pool.

(voice-over): After a couple leisurely laps, it was almost time to go.

DAVE WALSH, NEW HAMPSHIRE FISH AND GAME: Shows how unpredictable a moose can be, show up any time, do just about anything.

HERSHBERGER: Few things are cooler than a moose, especially one that hangs out at the pool.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

PHILLIPS: And once again, that report from our affiliate WMUR.
