Moderate Earthquake Hits Napa County, California

Aired September 3, 2000 - 9:00 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: We begin with breaking news out of northern California. Police there report at least one serious injury and scattered damage from a moderate earthquake this morning. It was centered in Napa County north of San Francisco.

We get the latest on the quake from CNN's Greg LeFevre in our bureau there -- Greg.

GREG LEFEVRE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Kyra.

A lot of people were awakened in the middle of the night on their Labor Day weekend, 5.2 the estimated magnitude of this earthquake. That's pretty significant. Perhaps the only saving grace is that this is in a rural area. The town of Napa, we understand, has been fairly significantly affected, a lot of broken glass, some broken water mains, and a lot of rattled nerves.

The quake knocked the power out for about 10,000 homes and businesses. About a third of them were put back on line quickly, the rest may come on later on today.

About two and a half hours after this quake, a small aftershock, what is believed to be an aftershock, rumbled through, 1.5, that's really very minor.

A 4-year-old child, though, we understand, was seriously injured, apparently by falling debris. That child has been airlifted from the Napa area over to Santa Rosa to a major trauma center there.

Also in Napa, the Queen of the Valley Hospital reports a number of people walking in with various bumps and bruises, being treated at the hospital there.

This is wine country, and that means casks and bottles all over the place. We understand in some stores a number of bottles were knocked off shelves. Damage to the wineries themselves will probably be determined later on today as the sun is due up about now and folks begin to assess what happens to their properties out there.

A number of these wineries have caves and caverns located in the rocky hillsides, typically rocky shelves, rock country is less affected by earthquakes and less affected by the rumblings in the ground. But all across the area we know that there are reports of -- lots of reports of minor damage, an auto parts store with the windows blown out and debris all across the shelves, and water seeping from broken water mains.

A regional emergency center has been set up in Napa, and mutual aid has been called in, fire and police and ambulances have been called into the area, mostly as precaution. Our crews in the area report that many of these fire units are patrolling the area now, that apparently there are no active fires in the area as we know.

Five-point-two is a significant quake, though, and we will learn more as the day progresses.

Kyra, back to you in Atlanta.

PHILLIPS: Greg LeFevre, thank you.
