Labor Day Travelers Are Keeping an Eye on Their Tires

Aired September 3, 2000 - 9:09 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Millions of Americans are traveling the nation's highways trying to drive safely during the holiday weekend, but there's one big new concern out there, tire safety.

More on that now from CNN's Deborah Feyerick.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): It's the Last weekend of summer, and a steady stream of people are heading out of town, south on the New Jersey Turnpike. But the normally carefree weekend has a number of drivers worried, all because of Firestone's tire recall.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's driving on probably one of the busiest weekends in the -- you know, in our -- in the year, there's a lot of Explorers, and it doesn't make me feel too safe.

FEYERICK: Explorers and other cars with Firestone tires, the government warning millions of those tires may have tread problems. Before going to Sesame Place, the Garfields took their car to the shop.

MR. GARFIELD, MOTORIST: Ford was pretty good, they, you know, took care of everything. They replaced one of the tires, because one -- you know, they check underneath.

FEYERICK: The Jakowskis (ph), moving down to Washington, D.C., were also careful.

MR. JAKOWSKI, MOTORIST: The van that I'm driving doesn't have them, but I did check as soon as I rented the car. I immediately looked at the tires to see whether they were Firestone or not.

FEYERICK: As for Louise Galden's (ph) car...

LOUISE GALDEN, MOTORIST: Just decided, OK, I'll just leave mine at home, and not worry about it. But also be cautious of the other cars.

FEYERICK: Easing up on the gas, the way to go for the Ortiz family.

MRS. ORTIZ, MOTORIST: We're driving slower, and of course more cautious, not as usual, and we also worry about other drivers.

FEYERICK: Drivers spending long hours to get where they were going.

(on camera): More than 28 million people are on the road this Labor Day weekend, and while many drivers are concerned about possible tire problems, many others are unfazed.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I'm not worried about it, I don't -- wasn't thinking about it.

FEYERICK (voice-over): As for Englishtown down to Dillard Boon (ph)...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I'm more concerned with people that have -- maybe drinking and driving than I am really concerned with the quality of tires.

FEYERICK: ... driving a little more carefully, like this man off to Amish country on his rented Firestones.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We have plenty of time, so knowing this, I think we'll take our time.

FEYERICK: Taking care to avoid accidents.

Deborah Feyerick, CNN, New York.
