Fall Offers Travel Bargains

Aired September 4, 2000 - 2:41 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: And Labor Day, of course, marks the end of the peak summer travel season, but if you have time to travel this fall, there are some great deals.

CNN's Jim Morelli tells us there's an added bonus: no crowds.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JIM MORELLI, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Wouldn't you know it: You get the kids off to school, settle back into work, and suddenly travel bargains are popping up all over.

RHONA ALBRIGHT, CARLSON WAGONLITE TRAVEL: Fall typically is a less expensive time to travel, kind of in between the seasons there.

MORELLI: The reason is simple: Supply exceeds demand. Fewer people have time for a vacation in the fall. Travel experts say those who do can really clean up: by going to the beach, for example, if you're willing to take some risks.

TERRY TRIPPLER, ONETRAVEL.COM: This is the hurricane season. But if you get down to the Caribbean and there's no hurricane, you can get a really good price on a hotel, a decent airfare, et cetera.

MORELLI: And don't disregard cruises either. Prices are at their lowest this time of year, and experts say the big boats have no problems steering away from storms.

But if you'd rather not take that chance, how about finally taking that trip to Europe? London? Paris? Rome? They're all on sale. For an even more economical getaway, think Lisbon.

HEIDI SHERMAN, "TRAVEL & LEISURE": Portugal is the cheapest place to go in Western Europe, and a lot of people are going over there. Especially if you live in the east, you can fly over there for a four-day weekend and spend your time at the beach or at old castles.

MORELLI: Prices in Germany drop this time of year just as the Octoberfest beer gets going. The crowds generally thin in Corsica. And if you're looking for something really different, not to mention cheap, how about a vacation in the Balkans? Specifically Croatia.

WENDY PERRIN, "CONDE NAST": You can basically get an Italian- style holiday in Croatia at about one-fifth the price. MORELLI: Still, travel experts say in the midst of these bargains there is one type of vacation you might want to avoid this fall to steer clear of crowds and high lodging prices. The problem is you can only see views like these this time of year.

Jim Morelli, CNN, Atlanta.
